At the November 9th bout we accepted nonperishable food items on behalf of Second Harvest Food Bank of Greater New Orleans and Acadiana.

Here are some facts about hunger:

  • 35 Million Americans are threatened by Hunger; 13 Million are Children
  • Minimum Wage is 30 percent lower in purchasing power than it was, on average, in the 1970s
  • 7% of poor people are able to purchase private health insurance outside the workplace
  • 40 Million men, women, and children are uninsured
  • The maximum monthly food stamp benefit in 2004 for a family of four is $471 or $1.31 per person per meal... The average per-person monthly benefit is $84 or 93 cents per meal.
  • A household may not participate in the Food Stamp Program if it has more than $2,000 in savings or other assets ($3,000 for households with elderly or disabled members).

If you have never experienced hunger, it can sometimes be hard to imagine. Second Harvest introduces Hunger 101, which simulates that experience with its interactive menus. Click here to start Hunger 101.

Humane Society

The Big Easy Rollergirls have selected the Humane Society of Louisiana as the local organization to support for our first bout of the 2008-2009 season.

We'll be taking donations on behalf of the Humane Society of Louisiana at the bout at the HPC on October 11. Bring an item from their wishlist and get a coupon for 10% off Big Easy Rollergirls merch!

Established in 1988, the Humane Society of Louisiana leads the fight against cruelty to animals statewide. It's not widely known that most Louisiana parishes and towns lack even the most basic services for lost, injured, homeless and forsaken companion animals.

The Humane Society of Louisiana has given voice to forgotten animals at 100 substandard pounds, winning hard fought battles against cruelty, which continue to touch the lives of countless thousands of animals each year.
